Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norwegian) started offering direct flight from Oakland International Airport (OAK) to Oslo and Stockholm a couple of years ago, with the allure of flying to Europe for ~$400 round trip (before fees) and connecting opportunities to the rest of Europe through Scandinavia. This certainly brought some excitement to Oakland’s airline route map

In September 2016, Norwegian announced two new direct flights from Oakland to:

  • Barcelona, Spain commencing on June 5, 2017 and
  • Copenhagen, Denmark commencing on March 28, 2017.

This is awesome news! It is also worth both routes would be operated with latest Boeing 787 Dreamliner on this route, which features bigger windows, higher cabin humidity and technology that increases stability during turbulence.

Not only are these Norwegian flights going to be fairly affordable, the new routes fill the gap of lack of direct flights from the West Coast to leisure destinations in Europe. Direct flights from San francisco International Airport (SFO) are mostly targeted to business travelers traveling to London, Frankfurt and Zurich, which means a casual traveler would often need to either transfer in the East Coast or at one of these major international gateways.

Oakland to Barcelona on Norwegian Airlines

The schedule is now available on Norwegian’s website. The flights run three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. For US based flyers, this can work out pretty well for a full 8-day vacation if you want to fly out on a Friday and then return on a Sunday to take advantage of two weekends. The flights times are also convenient with a Friday night time departure (no need to take Friday off) and a Sunday afternoon return arrival.

  • Outbound: Departs Oakland at 7:45pm, arrives Barcelona at 3:50pm (+1 day), 11 hours and 5 minutes
  • Inbound: Departs Barcelona at 12:25pm, arrives Oakland at 3:45pm, 12 hours and 10 minutes
Prices are generally in the $300 – $450 range one-way in the summer time, but go down to $250 – $300 in September. Note that these are “LowFare” prices so there are additional charges for checked baggage (no charge for carry-on up to 10kg), seat reservation and meals.

Oakland to Copenhagen on Norwegian Airlines

The flights to and from Copenhagen run twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Currently the cheapest flights are running at only $225 one way, which is incredible. Flights in the summer months run generally between $350 – $500 one-way, which is still not bad.

  • Outbound: Departs Oakland at 8:00pm, arrives Copenhagen at 3:25pm (+1 day), 10 hours and 20 minutes
  • Inbound: Departs Copenhagen at 2:25pm, arrives Oakland at 4:15pm, 10 hours and 50 minutes

Conclusion

The new flights introduced by Norwegian are very appealing for Bay Area based travelers. Barcelona is a particularly attractive destination as there is currently no direct flight to Spain from San Francisco. I’m really looking forward to finding an opportunity to jump on this route at some point!
